robin was a good un
i met robin around 1996 or so, at dennis d's old music store on camp bowie... i was probably driving dennis crazy trying to tell him what i hoped a guitar teacher could help me with, when he suggested that his pal robin would be a good instructor. that led to me having a couple of lessons with robin. we spent a couple of hours of him showing me stuff, me asking him questions, both of us having a few laughs. the best thing robin taught me was simply by way of example, in that he'd essentially taught himself how to play all that stuff. he gave me a sense that with desire and purpose, i could get somewhere with my playing. a while later, robin's generosity and openness manifested at a few jam sessions at the keys lounge. i wandered in and asked him if i could just get up there and play a few songs with him and the crew... he was nice enough to let me play, and be part of the wonderful uproar he and milan, kevin, eric, mark, et al were creating... he was more about energy and fun than dotted eighth notes and accented beats, so it seemed to my fairly untheorized self. at one of these deals, he let me drive for a short set... mildly terrifying, but he just seemed ok with it, and that made me feel better. like he knew he was doing me a favor by letting me hang it out on the line, and whatever happened, it was gonna create something good somewhere down the line. i felt a sense of courage, if not total confidence, and soldiered my way through. mark and eric kept the plane in the air... wow... my favorite memory of robin is the time i saw him onstage with mike morgan and mark wilson at j j. like maybe about 2001-2? he had his mike stand all decked out christmas lights, and had on a really elegant-looking western jacket. he was playing a $200 guitar that seemed to be cocked at a totally odd angle on his body. and man, did they ROCK! there've been times when i thought a good blues ensemble could transport a listener to bygone times, but really, those three were just spewing the distilled essence of the delta, maxwell street, deep ellum, south congress, east memphis, whatever the f***. it was serious. hound dog taylor, earl hooker, jimmy reed, they would've all been proud to hear that stuff going down. i was just sort of floored and in awe. i knew they were all technically good, and i'd seen my share of good blues shows, but there was just such a feeling to the playing that night... the best thing i can say about robin is that he really did live up to dennis dullea's assessment of him as being a world-class guitar player. it took me a while to appreciate him that way, but the biggest part of why i appreciate him, as a person, and as a musical giant , is that he walked among us, and was capable of sharing something of himself through his music, something that we don't get to see too often, too many places. he had it.

Great to see this site.
I did not know that Robin had passed away. On our NPR station in Chicago Bust Out did get some airplay, I bought it soon after. I enjoyed his style and originality very much.

True friends never die
I have lost so many friends and people I ve known for years in recent times, jesse taylor, Unc, Robin some I haven't seen or talked to in years. My wife says that if you hadn't seen or spoke to someone in 10 years then they are really not your friend. I don't agree with that. You see, I carry all of yall in my heart everyday of my life. There is something I have learned from each person that has ever passed through my life and Robin is one of those people. I have thought of you often and maybe you have found the peace in death that eluded you in life. I'm sure You, Stevie Ray and Unc have a helluva blues band up there. And by the way, you are one of the only guitar players that could play bass almost as good as me, ha ha. God Bless and i'll see you on the other side!

To an old friend
I am writing this in 2007, as I just see this site. But I think of Robin all the time as his e-mail address is still in my computer. He would write me often and even shortly before his death, but never saying a word about himself personally. Seems he was always a bit of a mystery to me for as long as I have known him. But you could not help but like Robin. It was just something about him. I was so saddened and shockef frankly when I heard that he had died, because he had just e-mailed me and everything seemed fine, or so I thought. But really, do we ever really know what is going on in the minds of even our closest loved ones? I hate suicide. My late wife did the same and we were married for over 15 years and I thought I know her every thought. But somehow, we have to just go on and thank God for the times we had together with those we have lost so tragically. I was planning on flying to DFW, as I have lived in Finland for decades and told Robin that we should get together to do some jammin' Next thing I heard he was gone. But he will never be forgotten and I am glad to have known him, heard him, sung with him and laughed with him. Christian-Charles de Plicque

Thanks for the website
Even though I didn't spend much time with Robin during his time here, I got to appreciate his love of music and I think he appreciated mine. I fondly remember him listening to some of my stuff over at my Father's house (Robin's cousin). Nice website.
